Union is a partnership between industry and craftsmanship, combining a specialist, factory-made, stainless steel extrusion with hand craft and self-made tooling to produce a range of furniture items with coherent and distinctive profiles. The collection currently includes a lounge chair, ottoman, side table and coffee table.
Each item in the collection relies on a rational framework composed of horizontal elements held between two extrusions that are offset along parallel lines. The metal components were produced with a combination of heat bending on a self-made jig and cold forming using a manually operated bar bender. The slender tabletops are made from a combination of solid wood and veneered panels. The canvas elements of the stool and lounge chair are cut, sewn and fitted by hand.
The steel extrusion is a semi-round profile with dimensions just shy of a half circle. When two profiles are placed directly on top of each other, it is clear that the middle of the circle is missing. The full circle is re-created by an offset that also provides the necessary space for the horizontal braces and canvas elements. The same offset is used for the tabletops, which are bolted in place using threaded inserts. Here, the circle is completed with two routed edges that run along each tabletop, echoing the steel profile beneath.
